The Evil Vacuum Monster!

A couple of days ago I tried to vacuum my living room floor with DJ around. I normally wait until Dean gets home from work so he can take him outside while I vacuum. But after not having vacuumed for quite some time because in the evenings, vacuuming always seems to get forgotten, I decided that I was just going to vacuum anyways and see how DJ did with it. He was doing so well that day. He wasn't being as clingy as he has been for the last couple of weeks. He was playing on the other side of the room while I was cleaning up the kitchen and dining area. It felt good to actually be able to be getting something done for a change. I was on a roll, so I decided to vacuum right then. Unfortunately the moment I turned on the vacuum I heard a blood curdling scream from the other side of the room. DJ was clearly terrified. So I turned off the vacuum went and got DJ and reassured him (he was still crying), but I still wanted to get the vacuuming done so I held him and proceeded to vacuum the floor. Again, the moment I turned on the vacuum he screamed again, then continued to cry and shake and whimper the entire time the vacuum was on, and even after I turned it off he was still clearly shaken. He didn't stop crying until I started nursing him a good ten minutes later. All the rest of that day he was even more clingy than he had been before.
I never got around to putting the vacuum away after that experience. I was too busy comforting DJ. Today DJ was having another remarkably independent day. I was making dinner and he was playing happily in the living room. I love it when he'll play alone, but lately those times have been few and far between. Suddenly the vacuum randomly turns on and from behind me I hear that blood curdling scream again. DJ had managed to accidentally turn on the vacuum and was again absolutely terrified. He wasn't quite the same all day until I finally put him to bed early just because he was being so fussy and grumpy.
I don't know what to do about this vacuum situation. Dean thinks that I should just expose him to it more and then he'll be fine, and I'm sure that would probably work, but in the meantime it just scares him so badly. He's never quite the same for the entire rest of the day, and it totally wrecks my day as well especially since it puts an immediate halt on any productivity I might have had that day.
