Talk in Church
Dean and I got to speak in church today. I was really nervous for
some reason. The last talk I gave only had to be a couple of minutes
long because I was still a youth speaker back then. Dean had never given
a talk before. This time I was asked to fill 15 minutes. 15 minutes
seems like such a long time when you sit down in front of a blank page
and begin to prepare a talk. Dean was really worried that I would only
talk for about 5 minutes leaving him with 25 minutes to talk. Well, I
prepared to the best of my ability, and then today I got up to speak... I
talked... and I talked... and I talked... and I looked at my watch... I
had already been speaking for well over my 15 minutes... in fact there
were only 5 minutes left in the meeting. Surprisingly though they went
ahead and sang all four verses of the rest hymn and then Dean got up to
speak. Before he started I guess the bishop told him that he was allowed
to go over, so he talked for a little less than 10 minutes.
I didn't realize that I was so long winded, I just kept coming up with more to say. I guess the length of it didn't detract too much from the talk because about 50 people over the rest of church told me how much they loved my talk. I really hope that I reached someone today... since I did talk for so long. I think one of the best things about our church is that we get the opportunity to speak from time to time. I think I probably got more out of this than anyone else. I really really enjoyed preparing it, and surprisingly I enjoyed giving it... a little too much maybe.
I was thinking just after I gave this, that I wouldn't mind being a sunday school teacher or something because then I would get to share my testimony and talk about this sort of thing more often. But it was not to be. I got a calling today as a worker in the nursery. Dean got called to be the ward financial clerk. It's about time that we got callings. We've been in the ward for months without any calling at all. I think Dean finally got his home teaching list today too.
I really like this ward. I've been more involved in this ward than I have been in any ward for quite some time and that was even before I got a calling. I just hope that now that I'm in the nursery and I don't get to go to relief society and sunday school anymore that it will continue. I used to get to talk to some people in the mother's lounge when I went to feed DJ in there, but he's old enough now that I never nurse him at church anymore. I have made some friends in this ward and I've really been enjoying going visiting teaching these last couple of months. It feels good not to be so isolated like I used to feel all the time.
