fun things that DJ does/says

me: "DJ, say one"
DJ: "two"
me: "no, say one"
DJ: "two"
me: "One!"
DJ: "Two!"
me: "fine, say two"
DJ: "three"
DJ likes to play in his laundry hamper, but I only let him when its empty. I washed his laundry yesterday so he had lots of fun playing in it yesterday, today however there were some clothes in it, so I didn't expect him to try to play with it. He's usually pretty good about that, but today he found his way around that little rule... at least in his mind. He brought it out into the living room to play with it, and I was expecting to see the clothes that he took out of it on the bathroom floor, but I didn't see them there, so I was a little confused. A little bit later I was getting him some socks and I found all of the dirty clothes neatly put away in his drawer... I guess he thought he was being helpful.

First thing in the morning after waking up
DJ: Canny?
me: no DJ, no candy until after breakfast
DJ: eggs?
me: yeah, we could have eggs.
I then proceed to cook some eggs and give them to him
DJ: no yucky... canny?
me: no candy until after you eat your eggs
DJ: no eggs, apple sauce?
me: okay, you can have some apple sauce with your eggs
I then proceed to give him some apple sauce in a bowl
DJ: no yucky... canny?
me: no DJ, no candy until after you eat breakfast
DJ: tales?
me: no, you can't watch veggie tales, you have to eat breakfast
DJ: canny?
me: no, we're having eggs and apple sauce for breakfast
DJ: lunch? canny?
...I guess I've been giving him too much Halloween candy lately... it's all he can think about

It takes a village to raise a child

I'm reading a book for my class called "Boys Adrift" by Leonard Sax. I'm getting close to the end of the book, and as I've been reading I've been fearing for my sons a bit. This book is all about how more and more recently boys tend to lose motivation and are content to live with their parent's until they're 30, playing video games and doing little else. It talked about how the education system has been changing in recent years and how in many cases it tends to disengage boys from school. Lots of smart boys just stop caring about school and call it "stupid" and just stop trying while instead they put more and more effort into video games. Of course, these trends don't apply to all boys, but it seems to be happening more and more. Girls are starting to fall into this pattern too, but not nearly to the extent that boys are.
