A Day at the ER
DJ has been sick for about a week now. It started out as just a bit
of a cold, but on Tuesday he was being really fussy and would hardly
eat anything. Thursday he had a fever. His fever has been coming and
going, with Tylenol ever since. He's been really tired, but sleeping
fitfully. He would fall asleep in my arms, which is something that he
hasn't done in months. He even fell asleep lying on the living room
floor once. We bought a thermometer on Friday so that we would know how
bad his fever actually was, and I've been taking his temperature every
couple of hours since then. When he's on Tylenol it has been about 99
degrees, but between the times when his Tylenol wore off, and when I
could give him more his fever got up to about 102 to 103.
This afternoon it was up just above 104, and at that point I called his doctor. He told me to take him to the ER, so that's where we spent the afternoon. After waiting around for ages in the waiting room, we went in and the nurse took his temperature again. I thought it would be okay because I had given him some Tylenol right before we left, and he had been acting a lot better and he didn't feel nearly as warm, but his temperature was still up at 102. Then they gave him some motrin, and then we sat around for well over a half hour just waiting for that to kick in. DJ fell asleep in my arms while we waited.
DJ woke up about 3 minutes before the doctor came in, and he woke up happy, and full of energy and not acting sick at all, except that he had thick green stuff coming from his nose and eyes. When the doctor came in he took his temperature again and it was down to 99. The doctor decided that he probably has the flu, but didn't bother checking for it because it is too late to treat. He also has a sinus infection which somehow caused an ear infection and pink eye. So, I was told to give him medicine for his ear infection, medicine for his pink eye, and keep alternating giving him Tylenol and Motrin to keep his fever down. I hate that I have to drug him up so much, but I'm really hoping that this will help him to get better quicker.
Dean left this morning for Louisiana for two weeks, so today has been quite a day for me. He'll be missing DJ's first birthday, and be getting back the day before his own birthday. We celebrated DJ's birthday on Tuesday so that Dean could be there. We were going to have a few other people there too, but that was the day that DJ started getting really sick, so we decided it would be best to just have it be us. I'll write more on that later.
